Put your Feet up and Relax at Boulder Cove Cottages, Nova Scotia

Do they leave a light on for you?

Hotels, Motels, RVs, B&Bs, even tents. There is no shortage of places to stay when you travel. When you get somewhere new it’s always nice to put your feet up and relax. Perhaps stay put for a day or two and just recharge your energy for the next leg of your trip. That is what cottages are really good for. They allow you to stay put, make your own meals, sit on a comfortable couch or porch and let the world stop for a while.

With plenty of seascapes, and easy highway access there are more than a fair share of nooks and crannies in Nova Scotia that would be ideal for a cottage stay. One such spot is Boulder Cove Cottages near Shelburne on the South Shore of the province, about 2 1/2 hours from Halifax.

Getting away from it all can be therapeutic

boulder cove cottagesOne of the best aspects of the Boulder Cove property is that it is off the beaten track. Once you arrive you know that you’ve found a spot away from it all – actually, on the drive in you have a pretty good idea that this is the case. That’s not to suggest that the drive is a difficult one, or a long journey through the brush, but the road leading to the cottages doesn’t have any other properties on it. True seclusion.

When you arrive you find a handful of well-maintained cottages separated by trees and with gorgeous views of the water below. The cottages themselves are comfortable, with conveniences that make it feel like a second home. A fridge for your food supplies, a stove for preparing your meals, and a barbecue for those special dinners, along with all the necessary utensils, plates, cups, and even a coffee maker.

Furnishings are comfortable and reinforce the second home feel. Not fancy, but made for relaxing with a good book or enjoying the evening after a long day of hiking or sight-seeing. The cottage we had was equipped with a Jacuzzi tub in the spacious bathroom that would be great for taking the strain out of tired muscles after any activity.

Row row row a boat

Canoes are available as part of the rental, as are bikes, and even a row boat if you want a romantic trip in the cove with your sweetheart. There are hiking trails in the woods or along the shore, and if you bring your favourite dog along (Boulder Cove welcomes them with no hesitation) they’ll love the adventure too.

If you feel like getting out there are many local activities and events to enjoy. Some of these include Shag Harbour UFO Festival, Shelburne Kayak Festival, Whirligig and Weather Vane Festival, and Lights Along the Shore (a celebration of lighthouses on the South Shore).

When you get away from it all you might be surprised at what finds you

Whatever you decide, when you get back you can have a campfire after dinner in the cottage’s supplied fire pit. While relaxing there you may hear the tell-tale sound of whales in the cove. It doesn’t get better than this.

If it rains and you feel inclined the cottage has satellite TV and wi-fi, but you’re here to get away from it all, so it might just have to be that book you’ve wanted to read instead.

  1. Reading this post made me feel so serene. My favourite getaway spot is also in Canada–British Columbia to be exact. The Sunshine Coast is magic in the summertime!
