Travelling with a flashlight may seem obvious when you read it but do you have one in your travel bag? OR your daily purse/bag?
Flashlight for Safety – better safe than sorry is my motto
We live in a crazy world, and you never know when there is going to be a blackout, disaster…or zombie apocalypse.
That’s why when we are at home we have smoke detectors, flashlights, fire extinguishers, extra water and food. But for some reason, we go to work or vacation, and we don’t think about this, we become complacent, drop our guard, and we rely on others. The Calculated Traveller is always prepared.
A flashlight is also useful for:
- Guiding your way to the washroom at night without disturbing your travel mate.
- Looking at a map at night in the car while on your road trip.
- Signalling for help.
- Walking through a dark parking lot to your car.
- Making scary faces by the camp fire.
The one I currently carry daily and when travelling is no longer available but it’s Maglite brand and looks like this one – it’s an affordable LED option and it looks to be a really good option. It’s 6″ high and fits in the pen slot of a bag.
Another option if you are camping or spending time outdoors, is to get yourself a headlamp.
This way you are hands-free, although it does take up more room and makes you look like a coal miner. It does come in super handy when you want to read in the dark too!
Whatever you choose to light your way make sure the batteries are charged and that the darn thing works before you leave home! If the batteries aren’t it charged it might just become a paperweight.

I’ve tested a lot of tactical flashlights. There are very good models on the market. I personally use Fenix PD35. The best combination of quality and affordable price to my mind.
I always choose and use MagLite as EDC flashlight. The flashlight that I purchased MAGLITE Mag-Tac because It is great american made flashlight! really bright and the strobe and constant-on features are nice.
Great article, I really like some of the points that you make. A flashlight can be the best thing that you can carry for personal safety. I carry lights in my glove boxes and an olight i3s on my keychain. The olight is a little more than the light that you mentioned but is reliable and made by one of the top flashlight producers.
Great suggestions everyone! One other thing to consider is that you don’t have to have a license to conceal and carry a flashlight!
This is so true. I always keep a flashlight at the ready with a backup in my home and car. I used to keep one of those mini maglites on my persons as well but my iPhone has a flashlight so i just use that instead (being a guy pocket space is valuable) and use my mini as a car backup. I have the LEDs there a little more expensive but I think its worth it.

What is the best way to defend yourself from a burglar with a flashlight? Have a really bright one and point it right to his eyes. I would suggest SureFire P2X Fury for this purpose. Or if you’d like maximum affect in a small enough package take a look at Fenix TK35. It’s a light bomb.

The new Fenix PD35 is even brighter now (1000 lumens) if you’re in the market. I just got one and it’s ridiculous how bright this thing is
